The Digital Home
With digital content becoming easier to access than ever before, consumers are looking for better, faster, and cheaper ways to share and distribute this content throughout the home in the easiest and consistent way available. Digital media has become one of the primary sources of information for entertainment.
Plus, rising support for being “green” has renewed and accelerated interest in “the smart home,” in which virtually all appliances including refrigerators, ovens, HVAC units, and lights can be remotely controlled via the Internet to function only when needed, saving money and energy.
The home computer is no longer relegated to just doing homework and paying the household bills. Now the home PC is used for entertainment, listen to music, watch instant videos, and playing the most extreme games with people all over the world. With the extremely popular online social communities the PC is much more than just a piece of office equipment but, rather the home computer has become the heart of the connected - digital home.
One major challenge for the connected home is finding a simple way to distribute this multimedia content throughout the home. One of the key issues in most homes is that there is only one central computer, usually in the den or home office, yet all that the users are in front of the TV in the living or bonus room. Providing true PC to entertainment connectivity, with a rich, full PC experience anywhere in the home is the ideal goal.
The internet has opened up the world to new possibilities for consumers. They now have access to large amounts of informational, educational and entertainment based content, creating a knowledgeable consumer with complicated demands. And they will be better able to communicate with their appliances over the Internet and the home network. Things are about to get a whole lot more interesting.

Powerline lets every electrical outlet becomes a network connection point - without adding any new wires! Customers can quickly install their own home networks just by plugging their Powerline-enabled equipment into the wall. Because it is so easy to set up and use, in-home PLC is generally installed by consumers themselves. It may also be set up by service providers.

To quickly and cost-effectively deploy triple-play services within subscriber homes, wireless is becoming an absolute necessity, especially when you throw in new multimedia services such as fixed mobile convergence. Trouble is, these higher definition services are quickly driving bandwidth requirements through the roof. These new multimedia services are more delay sensitive than plain vanilla data services, further complicating deployment.
